Test first — especially in older homes

Popcorn texture installed before 1980 can contain asbestos. Before scraping, a small sample is sent to a certified lab. If it comes back positive, the material must be handled by a licensed abatement company — not a general contractor.

The removal process

Protect floors and walls with plastic and rosin paper.
Lightly mist the ceiling to soften the texture.
Scrape the texture off with a wide blade.
Skim-coat the ceiling with 2–3 coats of joint compound.
Sand smooth, prime, and paint.
